March 2011 Photography of Areas Damaged by the Earthquake in the Northern Part of Nagano Prefecture

Approximately 13 hours after the Tohoku Pacific Offshore Earthquake (Great East Japan Earthquake) hit on March 11, an earthquake struck with an epicenter in the Chuetsu region of Niigata Prefecture (at 3:59 a.m. on March 12). Seismic intensity of more than 6 was recorded in Sakae Village in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, seismic intensity of less than 6 was recorded in the Chuetsu region in Niigata Prefecture, while seismic intensity of more than 5 was recorded in the Joetsu region and in the northern part of Gunma Prefecture. The magnitude of this earthquake was estimated to be M6.6.
Fortunately, there were few human casualties (only slight injuries were incurred). Nevertheless, the earthquake created obstacles in residents' lives as villages became isolated (this problem has already been solved) as a result of landslides and avalanches that sealed off roads.
